Customizing Your Steel Garden Edging with Accessories

Steel garden edging offers numerous benefits that make it an excellent choice for your landscaping projects. In this guide, we will overview popular edging accessories, creative ideas for customizing, and tips for selecting and installing the perfect complements to your steel edging. Let’s unlock the possibilities!

Edging Accessories for Added Functionality

Joining Kits

Special joining kits allow connecting individual edging pieces end-to-end for a continuous border. Our kit provides a predrilled plate, nuts, bolts and a drill bit, designed to match your preferred edging gauge.

Joining kits are required if you want to join the ends of the steel edges that you have cut yourself and thus remove the prefixed bolt studs. Or perhaps you needed to cut an end leading up to one of our corner pieces. To make holes for the bolts, you'll need a drill. While the joining plate is predrilled, you can place it low on the edge to hide the bolt heads.

Stakes

Stakes help secure edging, especially on slopes or soft soils. Our angle iron stakes have a larger surface area in contact with the soil than round stakes, which reduces movement in the ground, and the angle iron sleeves surround the stakes, ensuring a secure fit against the edge.

Corner Pieces

Internal or external corner pieces (90 degrees or 270 degrees) enable you to connect the lengths of edging or navigate around curves.

Our preformed corners are available in both 3mm and 6mm thicknesses and in all heights. It is possible to bend the 3mm steel edge yourself to create a rounded corner; however, our preformed corners are recommended for a crisp angle. Each corner includes a joining plate and fixings for connecting to the rest of the edge. Our corner pieces are 5cm by 5cm (plus a joining plate), giving you an extra 10cm of edge in total.

The difference is that the outside (wide) face of the external corner is on display, while the fixings are on the unseen side. For the internal corner, the inside face (at a 90-degree angle) is visible on show. Please see the photos below for reference.

Installation Tools

After you've prepared the site, all you'll need for most steel garden edging installations is a 15-mm spanner or socket and a lump or sledgehammer to knock the stakes into the ground.

You will need a drill to cut the edge to length on your own. Our joining kit makes it simple for you to reconnect the cut end to the rest of the edge. For more information on how to use them, please see our installation guide.

Use steel garden edging as raised beds or seating

Use cut edging pieces arranged end-to-end as attractive above-ground planter beds.

Top stacked pieces of edging with wood planks for contemporary garden bench seating.

Choosing the Right Accessories

Keep these tips in mind when selecting edging accessories:

  • Match the accessory size, scale, and style to your edging gauge and design.
  • Opt for heavy-duty accessories with thicker edging, and more delicate accessories with thinner edging.
  • Consider bendable versus fixed 90-degree corner pieces depending on your layout.
  • Pick lights powered to suit your accessibility - solar vs. wired low voltage vs. 110V outlet.

Installing Edging Accessories

Follow proper techniques to safely and effectively install your accessories:

  • Carefully join pieces using the provided hardware and splice plates for correct alignment.
  • Angle stakes alongside edging, only drive through edging face as needed with anchors.
  • Pre-bend corner pieces to shape if needed and seal joints with exterior caulk for water tightness.
  • For lighting, bury cables evenly with edging to hide wires. Seal light connections with outdoor silicone.

The possibilities are endless when you combine beautiful steel edging with functional and decorative accessories to match your vision. Take time to choose accessories that enhance the edging's durability, and blend with your landscape aesthetics. Let your imagination run free as you accentuate your edging with creative flair!
